Types of Advisory Lane Roads

There are four types of advisory lane treatments in the Netherlands: suggestion lanes (suggestiestroken), advisory legal bike lanes, paving-indicated advisory lanes, and one bike street (fietsstraat) layout. All four designate a part of the road as a zone for bicycling — a zone that is not exclusive to bikes, but is also used routinely by autos because the road isn’t wide enough for two autos to get past each other without one of them (or both) driving in the bike zone.

Pavement-Indicated Advisory Lanes

The bicycling zone is indicated by a different pavement type or color, without any lane lines or bike symbols.

Suggestion Lanes

Advisory lanes marked with broken white lines without any bicycle symbol on the pavement. Red pavement is optional.

Advisory Legal Bike Lanes

Advisory lanes marked with broken white lines, red pavement, and bicycle symbols.

Bike Streets (fietsstraten)

One of the three forms of bike streets has wide bands of red pavement on either side separated by a narrow, rough-paved central band, and functions as an advisory lane street.
